Week of 18th - 24th June 2007

vs Rye (Away) - 18th June

vs Old Stacians B (Away) - 18th June

The U12's Dragons finally got their first win of the season when they travelled the short distance to take on local rivals Old Stacians B in what turned out to be a bottom-of-the-table clash.

Ashford won the toss and chose to bat first on a very good batting wicket. Ashford got off to the worst possible start losing Jack Halstead for 0 in the second over with score on 3. This brought to the crease Ed Hall, who propelled the run rate with some lusty blows to score 12. Unfortunately the rest of the batting didn't show the same resilience with Jack Burden (0), Jonah Diedrick (0), Charlie Webster (1), Thomas May (4), and Nick Wright (4). This left it to William Timson to show the rest of the team how it should be done. William played with great maturity and patience to score a well earned 19 not out to guide his side to a respectable 91 for 8 with good support from Josh Houston (7) and Robert Yerrall (2 not out). This was the Dragons' highest score for the season so far.

In reply the Old Stacians batting wasn't up to the strength of the impressive Ashford bowling. Opening bowler and captain Jonah Diedrick rattled through the Old Stacians batting line up with his accurate medium pacers to leave the home side 6 for 4 after 5 overs with Diedrick taking an impressive career best of 4 for 1 in his 3 overs. Keaton Wood (3 for 4) and Thomas May (2 for 8) contributed to the rest of the Old Stacians batting collapse. With only 10 runs coming from the bat, wides were a major factor in the final total of 48 all out giving Ashford Dragons an impressive 43 run victory.

Ashford Dragons: 91 for 8 (W.Timson 19*, E.Hall 12, J.Houston 7)
Old Stacians B: 48 all out (J.Diedrick 4-1, K.Wood 3-4, T.May 2-8)
Ashford Dragons won by 43 runs.

vs New Romney (Away) - 21st June

Well, what can I say! After a slow start, the under 14 Bears performed like stars. With only 45 runs from the first twelve overs, we had a mountain to climb. Big bazooka Boatfield was caught for 12. The look on Jack Medows' face when he was informed there were only five overs to go was a picture. He quickly compensated by slapping the next ball for four.

Jack finished on 25. The next six wickets fell for only six runs in total, but we were fortunate that the extras were on our side. The innings closed on 66 for eight after 20 overs.

Due to school activities, there were new faces for the Bears - Sam Woodman, Ed and Henry Hall all making their debut for the under 14 side. So, as we prepared to bowl, the team knew what they needed to do. With the coach failing to identify the need for a wicket keeper when selecting his side, he called on Bradley G to pick up the gloves for the first time in his life. With both Alex Boatfield and Jack Medows firing on all cylinders, Bradley did amazingly well to concede only 5 byes. Jack Medows began his spell and produced the goods finishing with 3-6 after 4 overs. Well done Jack.

Newcomer Sam Woodman decided that a debut was a good time to impress the selectors and finished with 2-17. After Mr Joe Jolly was given an official warning to shut up during the bowler's run up from me (and I was scoring!!) he too impressed with a series of one handed catches that could rival anything that Paul Collingwood could produce.

Joe also bowled well with 1-9 including a wicket maiden. The wickets fell steadily, with a catch from Ryan Nash (yes I did say a catch from Ryan Nash) giving Ashford a well deserved victory. New Romney were all out for 53 with 12 being extras.

I’m very proud of you lads - well done !
