Week of
11th-16th June 2007
vs
Headcorn Hawks (Home) - 11th June
vs
Rye (Away) - 11th June
Ashford U12's Dragons travelled down to Rye on a lovely sunny Monday evening.
Captained by Jonah Diedrick for the first time, Ashford won the toss and elected to field first against a fairly
strong Rye side. The Dragons made a great start with Jonah Diedrick taking the first wicket of Rye Captain and danger man J Woodcock in the first over with just 4 on the scoreboard.
Ed Hall bowled a great opening spell of three overs for just 6 runs with no runs off the bat. From then on the wickets dried up as A. Lloyd-Dyke and T.Nunn put on an impressive 86 for the 2nd wicket, scoring 16 and 19 respectively. Jack Halstead did a sterling job behind the stumps for only his second attempt, considering some fairly wayward bowling. The Ashford bowling was lacking in penetration except for Jonah Diedrick, who finished with figures of 2-12, and Nick Wright with 1-21. Rye finally finished their innings on 109 for 3 from their allotted 20 overs.
In reply, Ashford got off to the worst possible start losing opener Tom Hinckes in the first over for 0, bowled by a corker of a delivery from skipper J. Woodcock. Wickets fell at regular
intervals until Ed Hall joined opener Nick Wright at the crease. This
pair then duly put on 70 for the 8th wicket, which was a great achievement from two such young and inexperienced players. The innings closed on 84 for 8 with Nick
Wright carrying his bat through the innings, playing some beautiful shots for a player as young as 9, for a club best of 15 not out, with great help from
Ed Hall who finished with a top score of 18 with some hefty blows to the boundary. This was the
team's best result of the season so far with some encouraging performances. "The lads are improving with every game. Keep your heads up and we
will finally win a game if we keep playing with the right spirit. Keep up the good work lads".

vs
Tenterden (Away) - 14th June
The Dragons were away at Tenterden this week, and with light rain falling it was touch and go if any cricket would be played. The groundsman made the final decision to play, which proved to be fruitful for Ashford as they finally won a league game.
Ashford elected to bat first and despite a quick start were soon two down for 15. Charlie Coleman and George Hansen batted well before Charlie fell LBW to Richards with the score on 23. This brought Mat Franklin to the wicket and he started to hit the ball to all parts of the ground before finally being
dismissed for 46 when looking for a glory shot to get his half century.
The rain had now stopped and, with the Dragons still batting well, the innings closed on 104. Richards and Parker were the pick of the Tenterden bowlers with two wickets apiece.
The Tenterden reply got off to a flying start with the Dragons bowling attack
supplying extras at an alarming rate. Eventually a breakthrough came with one of the openers bowled by Coleman, and this was followed by two run outs to put the Ashford boys in a good position.
The run rate however was still being maintained at 5 an over, mainly supplied by extras, when Etienne Bradley and Elliot Bingham were introduced into the attack and brought some control to the proceedings.
With the run chase on and lots of home support from some of the Tenterden 1st/2nd team, it was building up to a very close finish. When Elliot had Parker caught for 25 in the penultimate over, Tenterden still needed 9 runs from 8 balls. With some good bowling and fielding and perhaps some nerves from the Tenterden boys, the Dragons held on to win with five runs still needed.
All in all a good win and hopefully this will continue next Thursday when we play Mersham at home.
