Lovely stuff from Mike Day on Archie Wright. Mike, they still talk about your six in the three-a-side at Goat Lees. Was that the shot that finished-up in Hamstreet? While we're on the subject, Mike, would you be kind enough to remind us all of your other incredible feats with bat and ball in your time as an Ashford player. League, Sundays, midweek, cricket week, touring....let's have a Blog of it!

Talking of sixes Bill,Remember Chadersly Corbett on tour when Dwark (Martyn Eames had got a Hundred an the Pro refused a single because he had a bet with daryl that he could finish the game with a six,I did by putting jonesey into dung heap beyond the scoreboard but got stick as I ha protected dwarf. The finish to this that the other room 3 occupant daryl did the same at Old Vigs on the Friday.By the way The biggest six on tour was Paddy Stienoble at Old Vigs when he held up the County match at Worcester with a ball that landed at square leg and David Shepherd had to pick the ball upand return a hit of at least 150 yards or more you were there.

I remember on game against Starlight ( a team of West Indians) at Barrow Hill one sunday. Starlight ondon who arived on a coach and drank rum all day and night. On this occassion, they had a very fast bowler playing who, I believe was related to Andy Roberts, the legendary West Indian quickie.
Anyway, this bowler bounced MJ and hit him so hard on the side of the head that blood started coming out of the opposite ear! This was pre helmet days - not that MJ would have ever entertained wearing a helmet (" you've got a bat in your hand, son - use it!").
Unfazed by this blow to the swede, MJ proceeded to smack the very next ball (another fast bouncer) out of Barrow Hill and nearly over the St Johns ambulance station for a massive six.
" That's how you do it, son - never let them know you're hurt" was his legendary response.

Julian, That six carried well beyond the St John station. It smashed into the tank in Ashford town centre. Fortunately, only six pedestrians were taken to hospital.

Talking of sixes,

There used to be a prize for any player who could land a six in the back garden of the bungalow adjacent to Goat Lea Park! I believe this is still yet to be done by any player. It's a huge hit from any strip on the square!

Will this tradition continue? I'm sure all the guys will be cueing up for a pop at it should a reward be put on offer!

ben kevin hall tells me that the bungalow in question is that owned by his uncle john hall it has never been achieved however as reknowned six hitters kevin and i will willingly strike a special trophy suitably inscribed for any future winner hows that
as a matter of interest darren pugh is reputed to have smashed a windscreen of a passing car when batting on the annexe ground and i remember nigel llong smashing the screen of brother bobs car when playing for kent in the game to officially open the ground bob was however parked just outside the boundary
on many occassions the pavilion roof has taken a bashing and of course the field at the bottom of the ground has been pot holled on numerouse occassions

Who the hell is 'smooge'?

Can't really comment any more on the sixes as I obviously hit the ball along the ground!!!!
Ask poor Sammy Kennet about the straight six off him in the Twenty20 game a couple of seasons ago, or last seasons Stacians assie (PJ?) who's second straight break dissapeared straight into the back field, still going up as it went over the fence.
I can't ever remeber hitting Archie for 6, he used to spear it down the legside to me and Ealy!!
I have, since my return to Ashford, struck the first ball of the game for 6 twice - not a bad feat for an old codger like me!

Rob, in truth you probably hit more than 147, as of course I can only put on record as those entered in into the scorebooks by the scorers. Books copied up by players when no scorer usually leave a lot to be desired !!! Anyway one thing is for certain you've hit a lot more than anyone else for Stacians, more than Archie and me that's for certain. You may want to sit down now but even "The Rocket" managed to clear the ropes, now that is something !!!!!

Sorry Jon!!!

Willow, I've always said you were a slogger!! I think I've hit 150 4's in games against the old boys - Ha! Happy new year to you and yours and all the boys at Mersham.

Hat's off to Kevin for keeping such brilliant records for Stacians over the years - If only Ashford had such a statistical history. There are no records to speak of apart from the Kent league data. This is a shame, as there have been many outstanding performances that the new generation will probably not hear about. (10 for's, big hundreds etc).

whilst on the subject of sixes i am about to blow the mhyth my first scoring shot for hythe was a six on the vast expanses of mersham le hatch and i can claim to have hit two consecutive in the last over for the east kent league to beat the great kent league in the ccc cup that was at the huge whitstable ground the morale of this story for all of you sloggers is pick your grounds by the way i also recall hooking the great dave halfyard for six over the keepers head at barrow hill duncan purves my opening partner strolled casually down the pitch and asked if i always hooked so fine i am still uncertain if he was taking the piss

I was 13 when I struck my first six in senior cricket. I clobbered a bowler named Coleman when playing for Warehorne against Aldington. The ball landed outside the front door of Aldington village hall. Next ball, Coleman struck my pads, and I was on my way to the pavilion, victim of a decision that demanded a third umpire's intervention. Archie's dad was a canny old bowler, mean and niggardly, nothing like his son.

come now bill my dear old dad never bowled a dot ball in his life more like that back of the hand filth that you got away with for years whilst i was master of flight and guile luckily for dad the outfield at william road was always about a foot long so his figures were never too bad i also recall when dad opened the batting for ashford a team at lenham he and trevor hawke put on 200 for the first wicket andy barr and all
as a very young lad i was playing for ashford at barrow hill an opposition batsman hit a steepler right down my throat i knew i had a long way to go when peter nelson shouted ealys ball and alan had to race twenty yards before diving full length to take the catch the captain got that one right
