Subject : David's offer

David Coulson, a keen contributor to the Old Stacians website, is keen to offer his services to the official Ashford site. Delighted to have you aboard David - when the merger is ratified.
He makes the point that Old Stacians records have been carefully nurtured and stored down the years and he would like to see them protected, whatever happens between the two clubs.
As Ashford President, I can assure David and other members of the Old Stacians Club that the Ashford Club will always be mindful of the need to preserve the antiquity, artefacts and miscellaneous belongings that O.S. treasure.
Whatever happens over the next few weeks, the contribution to cricket in this area made by the Old Stacians club must never be forgotten; nor the great servants of that club who were instrumental in making it happen.
Whatever the result of the business end of this merger plan, I shall be raising a glass this Christmas to John and Jeff Hall; the late Tiger Rivers; Archie and Bob; and all the others who made Stacians so successful.
And to David, I say "welcome".
-President

dear bill thanks for the recent mention on your website i still find it somewhat amazing that the two clubs need to amalgamate in my humble opinion the friendly rivalry between the two clubs was always good for the game in ashford but i may be old fashioned wishing you a good festive season and i will raise a glass to the future of cricket in the town and to all of my old adversaries at ashford cc

Darran you should know, that Archie never seemed to have his own kit, so the answer is probably yes. Unless of course he picked up another lying around somewhere, I seem to recall he paraded in a Long Eaton Cricket Club top for about 10 years, after some poor soul from that club left it lying in a changing room !!!!

Happy Christmas to you all

Archie Wright is an absolute legend!

He looked after both me and my brother as colts at Old Stacians and someone whom we both have the upmost respect for, for the way he played the game and especially the socialising after!

I seem to remember Arthur wearing a Northants 2's jumper for a few seasons aswell.
Not sure where he picked that one up from!

Other memories include his 'Jagger-esque' moves on the dance floor!

Merry Christmas to all.

Hi Arthur,
Matt is well, he has a little boy and a girl to keep him busy now, he didn't play cricket last season but I am trying to rectify that!
Mum and Dad are good aswell, thanks for asking. I am in the office with them both at the moment and they send their best wishes.
Great to hear from you, hopefully see you next season.

Archie,

Would love to see you next season.
Dad was asking about you the other week.
That was 2000 more runs than i got with that bat.
I have had people asking about "The Beasty Boys". The nickname you gave to us old British Rail lads. I have to explain who came up with the nickname and why.

Pecker.

pecker i do believe that my brother bob was responsible for the beastie boys nickname it was aimed mainly at the gruesome twosome don and stormer aka the mongrels two talented cricketers but never candidates for the diplomatic corps hope your dad is keeping well and not still bowling those long half volleys i will endevour to catch up with you all in the season ahead and wish you all continued success in the league good to communicate

Archie Wright - a true legend.

Many of may formative cricketing memories are of the old man (obviously) and dear Archie.
Always a gentleman and a great opponent, we crossed swords many times in the mid - late 80's. I do have a lsting memory of one evening league 20 overs match when Creedy smashed one of Archies balls out of sight. The comment Creedy got from Archie cannot be printed here but was, believe me, priceless.
Archie was also one of the best football referees I've seen, gaining the most respect from players at local league level that I have seen. He treated everyone fairly but firmly and with some of the 'erbert's playing local Ashford Sunday football, that was no mean feat!

Archie,

all the best to you and yours ( i keep bumping into Glenn at various events where our kids are attending) and i dearly hope to see you again soon.

Love and best wishes....

In respect of the Hon Archie Wright I have a memory of him that will stick in my mind for ever.Archie was a very gifted player and he had been getting a lot of runs for british Rail so he was invited to guest for Ashford against The Cricketers Club in a mid week fixture. He was invited to open the batting, the opening bowler was a great fast bowler(who started to play for Ashford the following week)Ossie Gooding he was very very fast and hostile.Archie played the first ball Ok the next lifted his bat to late and hit the ball with the back of the bat for four, next ball castled. It was a shot never to be repeated.I would like Archie to remember this and me and the post was in spirit of rivallry we and Archie used to look forward to.Well done Archie for all you have done for the Game in the Ashford area, remember my six at Goats Lees in the three aside.

hello mike yes i still have nightmares about ossie gooding but also recollect many other happier memories of a host of midweek games for ashford a little story about you and the three a side do you remember making history when declaring ashfords innings closed against smarden with a rain storm approaching shane smith then set about the ashford attack and you were promptly beaten also i seem to recollect a catch you dropped in the gully where you often excelled a certain doug walters went on to score a mammoth hundred happy days all the best for the new year
hello julian thank you for your kind words it has been said that the older i get the better i used to be but it is still comforting that people hold me in good stead had i had half of your ability i may have been a true legend good luck to you and all at ashford for the forthcoming season i will be tracking progress closely how about joining glenn and i for a round of golf in the spring look forward to seeing you soon
billy day i look forward to that drink happy new year

Yes Archie I remember the game against Smarden,Why were we beaten You my old mate dropped the catch at mid off.But happier times as you said were had in the midweek games. We were fortunate at Ashford to see some of the greats and play against them.To name a few,Doug Walters,David Hookes,Trevor Chapple,Roy Sweatman,Bill Edrich,Peter Parfitt,Conrad Hunte to name just a few.We were also priviliged to play with and against players like Derek Underwood,Brian Luckhurst,Alan Knott,Mike deness,John Shepherd,John Dye,Alan Brown.David Sayers,Chris Tavere. All these players became friends of Ashford cricket club and this is what we should try and remember when we represnt the club. You young players have a history which was founded on Talent, will to win and pride that we had in the club plus the fact we used to talk to the opposition and make them welcome which I feel is lacking in the modern game with all the leagues etc. What happened to midweek fixtures of stature and all day games on Sunday these are wher you learn all the skills of being a Cricketer.
I wil do as bill Day asked and put some blogs on the site of the good old days.
Yes Julian I remember Starlight and I batted at 3 Graham Borwell and Duncan Purves opened and Dunc backed out of the quick very ealy in the piece and the firset ball did swede me but unfazed I did manage to connect with a few and got 84 but thats history

Archie,

I'd love to have a round of golf with you and Glenn one weekend before the season gets underway.
You'll find my mobile number and e mail address in the 'officials' section of the website. Look forward to hearing from you.
You'll be pleased to know that although most of my golf drives go a great distance, the majority of them dissapear over wide mid off!

I am in the process of organising a golf day which will probably be at Great Chart. We can also do paintballing.
Thee ae packages for both at competitive raes and, as a previous sponsor of the club, they ae willing to acomodae us at weekends. Early March will probably be the goer, but I'll post a notice on this site with further details, booking procedure and prices.
