Geary's recovery

Members might wish to know that Allan Gear, an overseas player attached to Ashford in the late 70s and 80s, is recovering from an operation at his home in NSW, Australia. He's okay, sends everyone his best wishes, and is hoping to come over and visit the club later this year.

Allan stayed with Yvonne Eames', one of our Life Vice-Presidents, at her then home in Albert Road, Ashford. In those days before professionalism, Allan swept the floors of Marks and Sparks store in the High Street and drove a van for Geerings to raise enough money to keep Mike Day in beer.

He is a member of the Northern District club in Sydney, but has never forgotten the friends he made at Ashford Cricket Club. Geary's telephone number is 0061403774828. Give him a call, even if you don't know him. Remember - it could mean a free bed on the next Ashes trip! - Bill Day

Dear All

Reading the banter between Bill Day and The Pro reminds me of those wonderful mid-week matches and Sunday first team days in the late 70s when the Puxley XI and John Williams' XI took on all and sundry, fortified with an endless supply of cricketing skill (or so we thought at the time) and by the hangover from the previous Saturday night out on the gas. Other than Bill, of course, whose warm-up for the Sunday game usually meant turning the heater up in the car on the way to the ground, and ensuring the editors managed to spell the words of 2 syllables or more he'd written in his articles.

Thanks though for posting news of my recovery. Although it wasn't the operation that caused me grief, it was the DVT that decided to dislodge and park itself over my lungs afterwards.

Accordingly, travel may not be permissible as soon as first hoped, so announcements of an appearance as 12th man at the Legends Day may have been premature. Shame, as I had already pencilled in running out several gin and tonics to Shag, Hammer, Bill, the Rat and the Pro, while they were in the field.

In the meantime, perhaps you might want to ask the Club President about rumours abounding during a certain tour to Worcester and staying in the Diglis, that, after being locked out after hours, club members may have proceeded to climb up to the first floor windows of a room and march through to the corridors, much to the chagrin of a young couple staying in the hotel at the time.

Folks, the website is fantastic, a credit to those involved.

Warmest regards to Ashford CC, and all who sail in her.

Cheers
Allan Gear
