Subject : Kanga's Back In Town

Bill

I was witness to Kanga's most recent Australian innings, just a few short months ago. Playing for Dave Hoare's Sydney Cavaliers (members might remember that Dave is also a former Ashford playing member, and in fact was married in Ashford during the summer of 1979) against the Hong Kong Cricket Club's local side, Kanga trialled his new fully fitted batting trousers.

Well, actually, in true Kanga style, nothing fitted at all. Bits hanging out all over the place. Please ensure you ask him about his latest invention during his visit. I'm sure he'll be delighted to tell you about them. At the same time, make sure you ask about the sand-tex on the face of his bat.

The match, which also featured what must surely be former England all-rounder Barry Knight's last overs in cricket ever (I was standing as umpire and poor old Barry couldn't get Dave to take him off - he was asking after 1 over), was played in the delightful Southern Highlands about a 2 hour drive south-west of Sydney at the HK Bank's private ground. Former Ashford, Petersham and Northern District player Peter "Lou" Rolls also played.

Oh, and for those who are still reading, Knighty must now be at least 65, can hardly walk, and certainly couldn't run to the wicket. But the juices still flowed, and immediately a serious stroke was played off his innocuous bowling, the away swing and leg cutters were a joy to behold.

Warm regards to all
Cheers
