Subject : Broven gets the 'Yips'

Members of a certain vintage might like to know I have received a Letter from America, signed by John Broven. Former Midland Bank, Ashford manager, John joined the club in the mid-Seventies. Stalwart member in his time at the club, and a great tourist. He reckons we have not listed him as a Life Vice President on the website.

I well remember giving John some batting tips in the corridor of the Diglis Hotel, Worcester at 3am. At that time, John had developed a batting form of the "yips". He couldn't hit the ball off the square. Having explained to him that you can hardly hammer a nail into a piece of wood without lifting the implement and striking down hard, John saw the light and re-discovered his backlift.

Unfortunately, in the process of belting my leg-breaks all over the corridor, he interrupted an elderly lady's slumber. She appeared at the door in hair-net and curlers, only to reel back in alarm when she noticed Broven receiving his coaching lesson wearing nothing more than box and batting gloves!

Not a pretty sight. Shortly after that he was banished to the States. By the way, John can be contacted by email via .

His address is: Hulse House, 40 Old Post Road, East Setauket, NY 11733. If you write, don't forget to say hello to Shelley, a lovely New Yorker with a heart of gold.

Bill
I remember a certain leg break bowler who, after a really disastrous over at Chaddersley Corbett, went to the nets to get his action right, taking with him that renowned bowling coach Ben Stoodley. How you ever bowled again I will never know - or perhaps you didn't.

Mike, It couldn't have been the day Hagerty and Day bowled 'em out on a raging turner at Chaddersley Corbett - or is the old memory slipping? Yours in sport -Bill
