Subject : Memories

Hi to those who know me as either Shag, Legend or Eamesy,

Apologies for not emailing earlier, but without the help of my son who is typing this you would not be hearing from me probably till next year.

Memories of years gone by, having played for Ashford for nearly thirty five years, there are quite a few! Most I suppose go back to the annual tour in Worcestershire, when I had the misfortune to share the notorious room 3 with B.Aldeagle for many years. Barry Aldeagle is better known as MJ Day, my old mate. The sight of MJ after a heavy night smoking his pipe, doing his business on the loo and being ill at the same time was a sight none of you would want to see! It was after a magnificent innings at Chaddersley, when he won us the game and then we had to celebrate it all night. Take it from me it didn’t happen very often!

Some of you will remember on the Friday party night the MJ Day look-alike competition, when MJ looked in shock horror at the contestants not very impressed, but amazingly everybody else was! And it ended up with Dobbin, a 26 stone publican from Ombersley, on the floor in hysterics. Take it from me the floor shook!

On the cricket field we played on the Thursday by an impressive hotel where Wolverhampton Wanderers trained. The pavilion where we played this team was not hygienic enough for the immaculately dressed Keith Hagerty, and everytime we played there he hired a hotel room for the day so he could have a bath before the game at lunchtime, at tea time and after the game. On the field at this ground we were once chasing 131 to win and were a 130-5 with plenty of time to go. I was batting with Ron Gummer and said to Ron I will slap the next ball out of the ground and we will go and get pissed. Next ball as you can guess I was bowled and in the next 10 balls we lost 3 more wickets, leaving Bill Horne and Bertie Palmer to get us the winning 2 runs. Bill called 70-year-old Bert for a quick single and Bert was left fifteen yards short of the crease and we were all bowled out for 130! Fines were very heavy that night. Jeremy has got to go now so other memories will be told when he is back at my house.

Regards

Shag (Derryl Eames)

Shag
I remember well all activites on all tours and you for one must have some photos to put on the website. I will remind Nigel Llong of his tours when I see him at a Test Match - I think that would go down well. I think you should relate the story of the rope across the road and the bank raid at Barclays Worcester
