Subject : Uncontrollable at Willesborough CC

Seeing that Ashford CC renewed their fixture against Willesborough this year reminded me of a game between the two sides in the late 80's. MJ 'The Pro' Day was asked by his skipper, Derryl Eames, to have a bowl. The first ball was a wide and the next one even wider. 'Never seen it swing so much' was The Pro's response to puzzled looks from his teammates and when the next few balls swung completely off the cut strip he stated that the ball was 'uncontrollable' and it was 'impossible to bowl in these conditions'. With both his teammates and the opposition in hysterical laughter, MJ decided enough was enough and he would teach them not to laugh by bowling his quick bouncer. With all the effort he could muster the ball was banged in short...so short in fact that it bounced three times before reaching the batsman who was nearly crying with laughter at this stage. I have a suspicion that Sparky was batting for Willesborough at the time and was the one in tears - perhaps someone can confirm this.

Ps...sorry Dad, had to tell this story. Good times…
