Subject : Old Day Whistle Test

Find the Culprit!

I am determined to find the culprit who stuck a whistle up my car exhaust on Ashford Cricket Club's annual tour to Worcestershire. I have never recovered from the embarrassment of driving my car from the Old Vigornians ground to the Diglis tour hotel for the Friday night end of tour party with a high shrieking whistle belching from my exhaust.

Upon arrival at the hotel, concerned colleagues removed a metal object from the exhaust, which had been used as a plug to block the pipe. It was more Dagenham Pipe Band than Elgar.

Any information that can be used to uncover the perpetrator of this tour crime will be richly rewarded by me during Cricket Week. Of course, I have my suspicions. A naval man, he once claimed to have bowled Hanif Mohammad, or some other Pakistan, or Indian, Test player in a game of cricket played across the deck of a ship steaming through the Suez Canal during the crisis in the late Fifties.

Believe it or not, I still have the offending "whistle", which is available for finger-printing. The advance of forensic science should also discover some DNA.

Yours in sport and fair play, Bill Day

I must admit I was that soldier - but you got me back with the Kipper on the engine. Well you finally found out - but I will never forget the Kipper Test to my brand new car. I searched high and low for that, and the smell when I got to Chatterly Corbett was foul ! So I hope on Legends day we can talk over the great times Ashford Cricket Club had in Worcester including flag-hoisting in the main square.

Not Guilty!

Mike, I'm not at all happy about your "Kipper in the engine" allegations. I do remember a foul smell in your car on a journey to one of the tour matches, but assumed that was Graham Pitkin, sitting on the back seat. If I am to be accused of this dastardly desecration of your new Ford saloon, prove it sir!

Bill

Guilty as proven by your admitting it was a new Ford saloon. I did not say what car it was, only that it was brand new. Thanks for the memory.

Hell Mike, you've done me like a kipper! Mon Poirot has nothing on you.
